unable to open external files

I am trying to open external files with the trial edition.

If I use <a href=".\<file>"> or <a href="<file>"> the link is changed to:

http://siteinfile/<file> and will of course not open. If I change the link to:

<a href="file://<file>" the link is file://<file> but still won't open. It just will do nothing then.

Am I missing something or will it just not work?

Sad I also have this problem,"href" tab is can not be used! Sad

SiteInFile based on Internet Explorer engine. As I know, IE7 doesn't allow you to open files from hard drive (depends from security mode).
